GENERAL INFORMATION

All of the walks use footpaths and bridleways. Even in summer these can be muddy in places, so that you are advised to wear walking boots or wellington boots.

Most of the walks involve passing through Gates. Please make sure that you close any Gate which you need to open. On all the walks you are likely to meet sheep. Therefore, if you take a dog, please keep it firmly under control.

You are advised to take a map, either O.S. Landranger 91 (1 1/4" to 1 mile) or better, for all the walks except No. 2, O.S. Outdoor Leisure, 31 (2 1/2" to 1 mile). Both these maps are available from the post office.

On walks number 6 and 7 it is essential to have proper walking equipment, including a map and a compass.

The times given for the walks are only approximate. All of them can be done much more quickly (or slowly). The walks all begin and end in Dufton. They are circular and can be done in reverse order. Also parts of different walks can be combined to make alternative walks.
